With his new publication “Ginza Haccho / Every Building on the Ginza Street”, German artist and photographer Michalis Pichler pays homage to both Ed Ruscha and Japanese artist Shohachi Kimura.
in 1954, Kimura documented every building on Tokyo’s Ginza Street in photographs published in the book “Ginza Haccho”; in 1966, Ed Ruscha applied the same concept and style to Hollywood in his publication “Every Building on the Sunset Strip.”
The accordion-style foldout book by Pichler, who had previously taken up Ruscha’s concepts with “Twenty-Six Gasoline Stations” (2009) and “Six Hands and a Cheese Sandwich” (2011), appropriates Kimura’s and Ruscha’s works in a modern concept and presents – as the title implies – a continuous image of every building on the Ginza Street in Tokyo, with each building and crossroads identified and named. Photography was done from a driving car, with the resulting photographs put together to form a single panorama-format image when folded out.
